approach to it. again, very brazen. >> greenfield police detective chuck fletcher says when you watch this greenfield speedway's surveillance video, you see one suspect with a dark shirt walk up and grab a hot dog. the second suspect in a white shirt sneaks behind the clerk at the counter and heads for the manager's office, where the newport cigarettes are stored. the man with the hotdog spots the open cash register, goes behind the counter, where a second store worker tries to stop him. >> there's a struggle there, and >> the clerk gets punched and but the clerk returns to the thrown to the ground but the clerk returns to the, fight for the cash. >> not the biggest employee. but again it's not the size of the dog in the fight. it's the size of the fight in the dog. >> and that employee was just letting him have it. in the struggle hot dog man , drops the wiener in the cash

when the hotdog fell out of the suspect's mouth, an evidence tech decided to swab it for dna. >> your mom tells you not to chew with your mouth full. and i say don't rob with your mouth full. >> police are waiting on the crime lab results on the dna swab. but the detective says the hot dog suspect also left behind a fingerprint on one of the cigarette cartons and the print leads to this man 37-year-old miguel kirkwood who was arrested by milwaukee police after another store was hit in july. now he is charged criminally with this robbery here in greenfield. kathy: what a story. and happening now, another speedway hit early this morning. south milwaukee police say these two men stole three garbage bags full of newport cigarettes from the location at chicago avenue and drexel. no one was hurt in the robbery. if you have any information , you are urged to contact police. joyce: rain moving through the area, slowing you down on area roads. let's check in with mark.

temperatures. we are down in the 50's now. it is a light rain, but a nuisance rain. if you have anything planned outdoors, be ready for this. no rain in our southern counties. everyone else is getting some rain. it is heavier in fond du lac and dodge counties, but overall this will be light, raw, nasty night out there. that will continue throughout the evening with our temperatures dropping into the lower 50's the forecast throughout the rest of the night and also into tomorrow. when this round of rain moves out and when the same low pressure center brings more rain, coming up in weatherwatch 12. joyce: thank you, mark. only on wisn 12 news, the 12-year-old wounded in a drive-by shooting monday is already out of children's hospital. the child was shot in a car in the lower leg. the car was parked near holton and locust. 12 news' nick bohr is there live and you talked with his mom this , afternoon. >> right.

, here on holton monday afternoon. he's doing so well, he took to facebook this afternoon to show his friends and share the experience with them. >> that stuff hurt, though. >> we're not identifying the victim, who on facebook showed the bandage around his ankle and used crutches to get around the living room. it's been quite the 24 hours for him. he was seated in the back this car when police say someone from a moving car opened fire just before 4:00 monday afternoon. there were at least two other people in the car at the time, but police tell us that that boy was the only one who was hit. the shooting apparently stemmed from an earlier argument. they've identified a suspect in the shooting. they're still looking for him tonight.

on wisn 12 at 6:00 a warning , tonight about already recalled dehumidifiers sparking house fires in our area. the washington county sheriff's office says it has investigated several house fires over the last few weeks believed to have been caused by the appliance. the dehumidifiers are part of two and a half million that have been recalled since 2013. they can overheat, smoke, and catch fire. the dehumidifiers are made by gree electric appliances of china. they were sold from januar through august 2013. the sheriff is urging people to check whether there cumulative fire -- whether their dehumidifier is on the list. they also say never plug your dehumidifier into an extension cord. joyce: commitment 2016 coverage, a strong turnout for the first day of early voting in the city of milwaukee. according to the city election commission, nearly 600 people cast ballots at the zeidler municipal building on monday. election officials say that's comparable to previous

increase to 4,000 to 5,000 voters a day by the time early voting ends november 5. meanwhile, the city is reminding people that you can register to vote ahead of time at milwaukee public libraries. >> if you want to see change, you have to vote. you have to be part of the electoral process. joyce: the general election is exactly six weeks from today, tuesday, november 8. kathy: governor walker tonight is hosting republican vice presidential nominee mike pence in madison to help him prepare for next week's v.p. debate. democrat tim kaine in pence's practice debate sessions. the vice presidential debate between pence and kaine will be held one week from tonight at longwood university in virginia. fresh off the debate, republican nominee donald trump will visit waukesha tomorrow. this is trump today in miami. the rally is at the waukesha county expo center. doors open at 3:00, with the

registration is now closed. tickets are no longer available. trump last appeared in wisconsin in the middle of august. hillary clinton's daughter chelsea is coming to wisconsin. she will campaign in the green bay area friday. the former first daughter campaigned for her mother in wisconsin during the primary. joyce: wisconsin's u.s. senate race is also heating up. both russ feingold and incumbent ron johnson are on the attack in new campaign ads launched today. wisn 12 news political reporter kent wainscott did some fact checking on the claims in those ads, kent? >> are throwing punches they've thrown before. ron johnson comparing russ feingold to hillary clinton, but with his own email scandal. and feingold blaming johnson for jobs being shipped out of the country. >> we need an economy that works for people like me. >> russ feingold's newest tv ad blasts ron johnson for his votes on various trade deals and makes a bold claim. >> senator johnson helps companies ship jobs overseas. >> we asked the feingold camp to

thousands of wisconsin jobs shipped out of the country since 2011, though the report doesn't specifically connect those job losses to the trade deals cited in the ad. the johnson team claims feingold "peddling a false attack" and pretending to care about working families after voting in favor of higher taxes more than 270 times. at the same time, johnson launched a new digital ad of his own, targeting feingold's state department emails, and comparing him to hillary clinton. >> russ feingold to push for a release of his own state department records. >> the johnson campaign and state republican party have accused feingold of working to launch his senate campaign while still employed at the u.s. state department a charge feingold , denies. the johnson ad calls for the immediate release of feingold's government emails. a feingold spokesman returned the volley, sing senator

saying senator johnson's false attack is a last ditch effort to distract from the questionable $10 million corporate payout he paid himself en route to washington. feingold leads johnson by six points in the latest marquette poll. we can expect to see the attacks ramp up in the weeks ahead. >> but it's a new approach today from johnson about the feingold emails. >> trying to connect russ feingold to hillary clinton in the minds of voters. the email issue has been hillary clinton's biggest challenge the . the johnson campaign is trying to seize on that. joyce: wisn 12 is teaming up with the marquette law school to host a live debate between johnson and feingold. upfront host mike gousha will moderate the 90 minute discussion. you can watch it live tuesday night, october 18 beginning at 8:30, only on wisn 12. kathy: new tonight on 12, raising tuition at uw madison. chancellor rebecca blank says she plans to ask the university's governing board to increase tuition for out-of-state and professional students. the state budget prevents a tuition increase for in state students. blank also says she plans to give $9 million in raises and bonuses to faculty and academic

uw credit union is helping all wisconsin college students pay off their debt. the credit union used to just serve just university of wisconsin system students. it is now allowing all current and former college students who live in wisconsin, no matter where they went to school, to become members. governor walker says the move is designed to allow more students to get low-interest loans and refinance their debt. >> you already have u union with competitive rates. we are thrilled they are willing to provide this option for residents all over the state of wisconsin. kathy: there's a website set up with more information about the look forward to your future initiative. we posted a link on our website, wisn.com. joyce: new tonight at 10:00, as milwaukee fights to put more officers on the streets dallas , police are here recruiting for their city. why they chose milwaukee to find their newest officers. then, regular people getting

narcan. the antidote to heroin and opioids killing in alarming numbers in our area. that's tonight at 10:00. kathy: developing tonight, a dead crow tests positive for the west nile virus in jefferson county. the crow is the second bird this summer in that county to have the virus. the other was found back in june. the west nile is spread to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito. so far, there have been no human cases in wisconsin this season. new tonight, a new place to play on milwaukee's south side. >> kathy: milwaukee mayor tom barrett was among those who helped cut the ribbon on the new butterfly park at 13th and forest home. the new park is part of an effort to increase the quality of life in the historic mitchell park neighborhood. a new mural was also painted on the side of the el rey building overlooking the park. the artist who created the mural says she had a lot of help from neighbors.

meteorologist mark baden, and big 12 sports director dan needles. the wisn 12 news at 6:00 continues. joyce: new tonight on wisn 12, the milwaukee county sheriff's office honors its finest. the department held its annual awards luncheon at the intercontinental hotel in downtown milwaukee. awards were given to deputies, correction officers, and others who have been involved in heroic acts over the past year. milwaukee county sheriff david clarke was out of town and did not attend the luncheon. new tonight on 12, police officers in pink. kathy: month will be wearing pink badges to raise awareness about breast cancer. about 75 officers paid for the badges out of their own pockets. no city money was used. >> the packers are wearing pink shoes, and the symbol of the please department is our badge. kathy: the sale of the pink badges raised $3,000 for the ribbon of hope foundation, an organization that helps breast cancer patients in the green bay

is closing. mimma's caf? has been a staple on the city's east side, serving italian favorites since opening in 1989. the owner tells 12 news she came to this country in 1963 and has been working ever since. it's time now to relax. >> i'm leaving because i'm tired. you know? i need whatever years i have left to have some life that i haven't had before. joyce: mimma said leaving will be bittersweet after 28 years of connectiit brady street neighborhood. and while she's not clear what she'll do next, she knows she won't sit still. she says she always has to have something to do. the restaurant will close in january. kathy: great restaurant. great lady. mark: a nice night to maybe get inside and have something warm. joyce: turn up the fireplace. mark: we could. some people are starting fires tonight.

there are quite a few who have turned their furnace on. ago, they have their air on. you have to love wisconsin in september. i don't think it is 50. i think it has cooled off, but i think we have a malfunction on the thermometer. most areas are sitting warmer than that. to racine we go, an interesting cl we may have some waterspouts. that is a small tornado over the water, something i will keep a close eye on. 58 in racine. the rain has not moved in yet. light rain in milwaukee, 57, dew point at 46. the rain showers rolling through. this will rotate through southeastern wisconsin, so if it is not raining yet, it will be during the rest of this evening

forecast all through this week. not a complete washout either. fairly steady rain in our northern counties. i 94 corridor to the north, rain the heaviest. extending from fond du lac into plymouth to sheboygan falls, picking up the rain there. interstate 41 from fond du to germantown, scattered showers there. it is green, no thunderstorms whatsoever. it will be a light, nuisance rain throughout this evening. fairly dry in our southern counties. maybe a touch, a sprinkle, or a missed right now, but that would be about it. i know you know what to wear, bidding place -- but in case you forgot, sweatshirts, jacket, and rain gear. temperatures have cool down.
